2021: Thankfully and creatively, Aspen Snowmass, in collaboration with the U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club (AVSC), was able to host the US Alpine Championships this season. With covid protocols in place, no spectators and limited media, the races took place safely, with a feeling of relief and sense of gratitude.
And the medals took a unique twist… repurposing vintage (80s) skis. I sawed them into pieces… This was hard, as the skis are so beautiful. Especially the colorful K2s and the Japanese Yamahas with their minimal graphics… But the cross-sections were just as slick with their laminated hardwood and various layers. Discipline and place is engraved on the backs.
